Experience leadership in action


Discovery students collaborate on group projects to experience leadership in action. The service learning projects require and enable them to:

  • Identify problems in their communities that they would like to solve
  • Form groups that share an interest in the same causes
  • Articulate project ideas
  • Create shared visions and missions for their projects
  • Develop action plans with clear targeted outcomes
  • Create communication and collaborate structures for their project teams
  • Engage stakeholders in their communities
  • Take initiative to implement their plans and share results.

Discovery students have made a difference

Discovery students have made a difference in their communities through a variety of projects including:

  • Business Ethics in the Tourism Sector with Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)
  • The Best Future – personal and professional development workshops for recent and soon to be graduates at the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University
  • Website for the Forum for Women in Development (FWID)
  • Life Personal Development Foundation – personal and professional development workshops
  • Ever Clean – a recycling campaign at Cairo University
  • Egyptian Youth Dreams – encouraging volunteerism on projects of importance to Egypt
  • We Are One – teaching life skills to street children
  • Stop Sexual Harassment Campaign with the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights (ECWR)
  • Employment fairs through the Career Advising and Placement Services (CAPS) at Cairo University
  • Student activities and training programs through the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) at Cairo University
  • Awlad El Hay – religious and life skills training for lower income children in Maadi at the Digla Mosque
  • Be On Time! – public transportation directory
  • Enta A7la – preparing youth to face practical life efficiently
  • Keys for Future Careers – developing youth practical skills through training
  • Green Minds – spreading environmental awareness to children and youth
  • The Channel! – improving university environment through better communications between administration and students

Discovery students have distributed their time

Discovery students do community service work to volunteer with local institutions to help a cause that they believe in. Students volunteer a minimum of three hours each week in community organizations of their choice and keep a journal of their experiences. Places students have volunteered include:

  • Resala charity organization (orphanages and food distribution)
  • Mazeed (recycling)
  • Alashanek ya Balady Association for Sustainable Development (community development)
  • Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt
